Epistemology, Digital Generation, Digital Literacy, Fact, Opinion, Critical ThinkingAbstract
The development of digital technology has transformed the way
humans access, produce, and disseminate information. In the
digital era, individuals, especially the younger generation, face
challenges in determining the validity of information due to the
rapid spread of misinformation, disinformation, and biased
content. Therefore, epistemology as a study of knowledge
becomes essential in building critical thinking skills to
distinguish between facts and opinions. This article aims to
analyze the role of epistemological understanding in shaping
digital generations who are able to evaluate information
critically and responsibly. The study uses a qualitative approach
with a literature review method by examining concepts of
epistemology, digital literacy, and critical thinking.
Epistemology provides a foundation for understanding how
knowledge is obtained, verified, and justified through logical
reasoning, evidence, and reliable sources. In digital
environments, the ability to identify facts requires skills such as
source evaluation, data verification, and awareness of personal
bias, while opinions must be recognized as subjective
interpretations that may vary among individuals. The integration
of epistemological values into digital literacy education can
strengthen students’ analytical abilities, ethical awareness, and
responsibility in using technology. Digital literacy is not only
about the ability to operate digital tools but also about the
capacity to interpret information wisely and avoid accepting
every piece of content without examination. This study concludes
that epistemology plays an important role in preparing the
digital generation to become intelligent information users who
can differentiate truth from personal perspectives and contribute
positively to the digital society.
