Abstract

The phenomena of environmental degradation, moral crisis,
social inequality, and various forms of human misconduct have
become increasingly complex global issues in the modern era.
The Qur'an, as the primary source of Islamic teachings,
addresses these problems through the concept of fasad fil ardh
(corruption or destruction on earth), as stated in Surah Ar-Rum
[30]: 41. This study aims to analyze the concept of fasad fil ardh
and human responsibility from the Qur'anic perspective, focusing
on the interpretation of Surah Ar-Rum [30]: 41. This research
employs a library research method with a thematic interpretation
(tafsir maudhu’i) approach by examining Qur'anic verses related
to corruption, destruction, and human stewardship. Primary data
sources include the Qur'an and classical as well as
contemporary exegeses, while secondary data are obtained from
relevant scholarly literature. The findings reveal that the concept
of fasad fil ardh encompasses not only environmental destruction
but also moral, social, economic, political, and spiritual
degradation resulting from human deviation from divine values.
Surah Ar-Rum [30]: 41 emphasizes that corruption and
destruction on land and sea are consequences of human actions.
From the Qur'anic perspective, human beings bear the
responsibility of serving as both servants of Allah and stewards
(khalifah) on earth by maintaining ecological balance, upholding
justice, preserving public welfare, and preventing all forms of
corruption and destruction. Therefore, addressing contemporary
crises requires not only technical and material solutions but also
approaches grounded in spiritual, moral, and Qur'anic ethical
values. This study concludes that the concept of fasad fil ardh
remains highly relevant in fostering ecological awareness and
strengthening human social responsibility in the contemporary
world.
