The development of digital technology and globalization has significantly
influenced the existence of national identity in modern society. Digital
transformation has changed the way people communicate, interact, and understand
their cultural values. On one hand, the digital era provides opportunities to
strengthen national identity through wider access to information, cultural
promotion, digital education, and the preservation of national heritage. On the
other hand, rapid modernization and global cultural flows create challenges, such
as cultural shifts, reduced interest among younger generations in local traditions,
and the increasing influence of foreign cultures that may weaken national
character. This article aims to analyze the existence of national identity in the
digital era by examining the relationship between modernization and cultural
preservation. This study uses a qualitative approach with a literature review
method by analyzing books, scientific journals, and relevant academic sources
related to national identity, globalization, digital technology, and cultural
preservation. The findings show that national identity is not a static concept but
continues to develop according to social and technological changes. Digital media
can become an effective instrument for maintaining national identity through
cultural documentation, creative content development, and the introduction of local
traditions to global audiences. However, the use of digital technology must be
accompanied by cultural awareness, digital literacy, and active participation from
society, especially the younger generation. Therefore, modernization should not be
viewed as a threat but as an opportunity to strengthen national identity by
integrating technological advancement with cultural values. A balance between
innovation and cultural preservation is essential to ensure that national identity
remains strong in the digital age.
