This study aims to analyze the role of the principal in improving teacher performance at SD Negeri 131 Palembang. The study employed a qualitative research method with data collection techniques including interviews, observations, and documentation. The research informants consisted of the principal and the vice principal for curriculum affairs. Data were analyzed through the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results of the study indicate that the principal plays a very important role in improving teacher performance through providing motivation, conducting coaching and learning supervision, building effective communication, creating innovations, and establishing a conducive work environment. The principal provides motivation through direction, appreciation, and support for teacher competency development. In addition, supervision and coaching are carried out regularly to improve the quality of learning, discipline, and teacher professionalism. The principal also builds open and harmonious communication to create good cooperation between teachers and the school. Innovations are implemented through the use of learning technology, training programs, and teacher discussion activities. A comfortable, harmonious, and democratic work atmosphere also supports the improvement of teachers’ work motivation. Based on the findings, the principal’s leadership style tends to be participative, democratic, and transformational, which significantly contributes to improving teacher performance at school.
