Educational institutions today operate in an increasingly complex
environment and face various risks, including academic, financial,
operational, reputational, and regulatory-compliance risks. The absence of
a risk management framework integrated with the governance system often
causes risk handling to be reactive, partial, and unsustainable, negatively
affecting institutional performance. This article aims to conceptually
examine how risk management built upon a foundation of good governance
can improve the performance of educational institutions. The study
employs a qualitative approach through a descriptive-analytical library
research method, reviewing academic literature, laws and regulations, and
relevant prior studies. The findings indicate that integrating risk
management into governance structures—through strengthened
transparency, accountability, stakeholder participation, and leadership
commitment—can encourage more rational, data-driven decision-making,
strengthen financial stability, maintain the quality of educational services,
and enhance public trust. This study recommends that educational
institutions establish a risk management unit or function embedded within
their governance structure, periodically develop a risk register, and
integrate risk management into internal quality assurance systems and
institutional strategic plans.
